Mobility and Riding Indoors

Having a balanced training program is more important than ever right now with so much time spent indoors on trainers. When mobility and flexibility are addressed in a properly designed training program, the body is able to spend greater time in that stationary position (very different when riding outdoors). When you are uncomfortable in a fixed bike position, fatigue comes on quicker and/or your power number’s are just not the same. This results in threshold numbers that are much more difficult to a achieve. This is especially critical when attempting repeated efforts. There is a lot of talk about addressing these concerns  with ”core” work. This is important, but it's just one dimension of the equation. Let’s break this down so you understand what’s happening in the body in these different riding positions. The purpose of the core is to stabilize the spine. When riding outside we are able to shift body position, stand up and move the bike under us.  When we do this, we can ride comfortably for longer and produce the desired watts easier. Riding a trainer exaggerates weak links in the body. The spine is forced to move more than it is supposed to making up for the lack of movement in the hips. You might of noticed people developing strange riding techniques when riding inside. Bad habits can develop and bigger numbers can become harder to hit because you are unable to use the upper body as you would when outside. So what can you do to remedy this without taking away from your precious riding time? It does not take much, it just takes consistency and specific movements that I can show you.

Join me Monday, Wednesday’s and Friday's for a free mobility, flexibility and core class (with a touch of strength). Reach out, ask some questions and we will do our best to answer those questions live. All classes are recorded and able to view anytime on YouTube at our channel “ Info Good Medicine Lodge”. Thanks and we hope to see you there!  - Ryan Grenier
